This essay might be a game-changer for anyone who wants to talk to their favorite magician…
Here’s the context:
Recently we’ve been talking A LOT about luck with people.
In our eyes, there are three types of luck:
Luck type number one:
Blind luck.
This type of luck could be categorized as finding a hundred-dollar bill outside your house, simple blind luck.
Luck type number two:
Statistical luck.
If you knock on a hundred doors trying to sell a product, chances are 1 of those people will buy it, your chances increase as with the number of doors you knock.
Luck type number three:
Attracted luck.
This is the type of luck that seeks you out after prolonged statistical luck, e.g. Post Malone produces a lot of songs, grinds for a long time, and is finally noticed by a huge record label. Because he was so good and worked so hard, this luck was attracted to him.
Here’s a story to illustrate how we’ve experienced these three types of luck in magic:
When we started our podcast, we realised pretty soon that the show would be a lot more fun if we could interview the best magicians in the world.
There was just one issue…
How could we get them to agree to meet us?
It was intimidating at first, for sure.
So the first person we reached out to was Danny Goldsmith on Instagram.
By simple blind luck, the first person we asked said yes, and turned out to be one of our closest friends in magic to this day.
After this early success, we were spurred to try and produce statistical luck.
So we jumped in feet first and started messaging magicians left right and centre.
Over time, we realised something…
There’s a secret to talking to your favorite magicians:
Just send them a message.
You don’t need any fancy CV or diploma. You don’t need to be a famous magician yourself. All you need to do is offer them something (anything) of value.
Magicians are just people too. If you’re potentially offering them something of value, it’s in their best interest to at least find out if you’re legit or not!
For example…
“Hey NAME! I’ve been a huge fan of your magic for years. I was recently playing with a routine of yours, and I think I found a cool way to make X part smoother. Want to talk about it?”
Sounds simple, doesn’t it?
Well, the truth is…it IS simple!
So why don’t more people do it?
As far as we can tell, it just comes down to fear of rejection.
Well, if you want to achieve things, you have to get rid of that ASAP. Rejection is part of the game.
There are plenty of magicians we’ve reached out to that we didn’t get a reply back from.
And guess what?
That’s fine.
See, this is mainly a numbers game. We know that if we email 10 of our favorite magicians, a certain percentage of them WILL most likely get back to us.
Of those people that respond, nearly all of them will end up coming on the podcast.
So to finish the story here’s the third type of luck in action, attracted luck:
When we were on a phone call with Christian Grace, Andrew Frost happened to be in the same room.
He immediately jumped on the call and asked us if we could meet him.
That’s simple attracted luck in action.
If you remember nothing else, remember this:
Luck is preparation multiplied by opportunity.
